You are Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the virtual company Logistics 2020 in the fictitious country of Cinkara. You have the responsibility for making a range of operational and strategic corporate decisions over a period of three and a half years (7 rounds, each representing a virtual 6 month period). In each round your Management Team will present you with operational and strategic matters and various options for their resolution. In each round you will also receive an economic forecast detailing various economic and industry trends which your analysts wish to draw to your attention.
The express service industry is a competitive and growing industry, home to a diverse range of businesses. Logistics 2020 currently occupies the third position in the market and offers a domestic Pre-12 product, i.e. a service where customers' shipments are delivered to a domestic address before noon the following day.
Pre-12 shipments are picked up from your customers at their place of business by a courier driver in a van and transported to your nearest depot. At the depot, depot operators unload the vans and sort all the shipments according to their ultimate destination. Shipments then continue on their journey with other shipments going in the same direction. At this point either another courier will take the shipment to its ultimate destination if it is near the depot, or the shipment will be loaded onto a linehaul truck and transported to another depot where this process repeats itself until the shipment reaches its final destination.
As Logistics 2020's business operations expand, more products will be offered. By the end of the First Level of DHL Fast Forward, Logistics 2020 will also be offering a domestic Pre-9 service and international Pre-9 and Pre-12 services. Different resources are required for different services: As you begin to offer international services new infrastructure is required to ensure timely delivery - for instance an aircraft to deliver shipments overseas and additional sales offices to support expanded operations.
