The compendium – valuable additional information available in Flash
With the help of the University of Applied Sciences in Darmstadt, Germany, this comprehensive introductory course into logistics and logistics management has been prepared for you. The content of the course, some of which is exclusive, is divided into seven chapters. Chapters 1 (Origin & Definition of Terms) and 2 (Trends & Challenges) explore the development of logistics from ancient times to the present. The unique characteristics of logistics are explored, just as current economic and social trends are, including globalization. Chapters 3 (Services & Range of Activities), 4 (Tasks & Functions) and 5 (Processes & Principles) examine the many facets of logistics. While delving into these chapters, the reader learns that there is not just one form of logistics. The key lesson is that, depending on the point of view, there is a multitude of different branches in logistics: They range from the service areas of TTS and contract logistics, mail and CEP services as well as event logistics to overarching processes in the form of procurement, production, distribution, replacement-parts and disposal logistics. Added to this are specific tasks performed within the logistics system, including order processing, inventory management or the selection of suitable packaging and means of transport. The focus of Chapter 6 (Management & Organization) is on the management of logistics. This chapter touches on strategic logistics planning, logistics networks, supply chain management, the framework conditions of global logistics and logistics controlling. Chapter 7 (Technologies & Innovations) rounds out the logistics compendium with a close look at research and development. Questions addressed here include both the automation of intralogistics processes and electronic data transfer as well as environmental protection. The course is supplemented by a comprehensive logistics glossary filled with definitions of functional terms.
The HTML version is designed to serve primarily as a work tool. The Flash version, on the other hand, offers a multimedia presentation of all information. It includes a large number of interactive graphics, animations and videos. Each chapter also includes a test about its content.
