Ocean bill of lading

The ocean bill of lading – or the contract of carriage by sea – contains documents about the agreement reached between the sender and the carrier (shipping company).

On demand

On demand is a special materials-flow concept in which a goods flow is initiated only at the moment of request, e.g., needs-driven.

One-stop shopping

Under the concept of one-stop shopping, several retail or service outlets from complementing sectors are brought together at a main access point. As a result, the customer can take care of all of his needs at one time.

Open register

The open register is a term used in the shipping industry. It describes the shipping registers of countries that permit foreign companies or persons to enter themselves into the national shipping register. Anyone who does so is entitled to sail under the flag of that particular country.

Open storage

In open storage, construction activity is limited to laying a base that can be used by the means of transport. Open storage is particularly well suited for goods that are insensitive to weather conditions. Or the storage goods must receive extra protection against the effects of weather (e.g., with shrink foil or tarpaulins). Floor storage is the form of warehousing that is selected in most cases.

Operator

Operators are forwarders involved in international transport who offer a continuous transport chain with continuous liability on a carrier basis.

Operatorless transport system

Operatorless transport systems are floorborne conveyor systems using transport vehicles that are automatically driven and powered. The systems are favored for internal materials-flow activities.

Order completion

Order penetration point

The order penetration point is the critical interface for postponement decisions between forecast-based production and order-based production.
At the order penetration point, the place where a large number of product variations are created should coincide with the place where customer orders begin to steer the logistics channel. As a result, the variations can be completed and distributed without any storage or out-of-fashion risks.
The goods flow is driven by forecasts until the order penetration point (push principle) is reached. The goods flow is activated by customer orders starting at the order penetration point (pull principle). In terms of warehousing costs, the order penetration point should be located at the level of lowest possible value creation.

Order processing

Order processing covers the transmission and data-related handling and checking of orders from order acceptance from the customer to the receipt of all shipping documents and invoices by the customer. A distinction can be drawn between technical and commercial order processing. Technical order processing involves the writing of a sales offer, construction, work preparation, procurement, component manufacture, assembly and dispatch. Commercial order processing concerns calculation, purchasing and financial accounting.

Order quantity

Order quantity describes the amount of a good that has been requested.

Order-cycle system

The order-cycle system employs a constant cycle of ordering determined by factors such as a supplier’s delivery rhythm or the production rhythm. If withdrawals have been made from the warehouse, reorders will definitely be made at the end of the order cycle.

Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development

The OECD is an international organization with 30 member states and close ties to 70 other countries. The OECD’s mission is to ensure currency stability, promote world trade, to plan and encourage economic growth, and to coordinate economic aid for developing countries. To this end, it regularly compiles and publishes country, economic and statistical reports, organizes economic-policy conferences, and provides advice on social and economic issues. The organization is headquartered in Paris.

Origin services

Origin services are support/value-added services provided at the point of origin of goods and materials. These services can include procurement, order processing, vendor compliance, quality checks, document management, container optimization, pick & pack, pallet loading, customs processing and consolidation.

Outbound logistics

Outbound logistics covers the entire supply chain of goods following production: from manufacture and retailing to the end customer. It includes manufacturing, waste management, packaging, picking, packing, final assembly, dispatching and replacement-parts management.

Outsourcing

In outsourcing, jobs or services that are not part of a company’s core business are subcontracted to external partners. The outsourcing of logistics activities is one of the most frequent forms. The word is derived from “outside” and "resourcing.”

Overcarrier

An overcarrier is an alliance of shipping companies that, in a certain period of time, transports a volume of cargo that exceeds its allotted limit. Its antipode is the so-called undercarrier. In this arrangement, the overcarrier must provide compensation to the undercarrier if the individual shipping company has adhered to the schedule.

Overhead conveyor system

Overhead conveyor systems are frequently used in the manufacture of machinery and installations. They are used for transports between manufacturing stages and can perform tasks in production processes, including cooling and drying. They can also be used as safety stocks.
