Das Logistik-Glossar
General cargo
General cargo is freight that weighs up to about three tons. In terms of quantity, volume and weight, it is rather small. It can be transported piece by piece and with typical means of conveyance (e.g., forklifts, fork lift trucks). One characteristic of general-cargo shipments is that the means of transport is not fully utilized.
Groupage transport
Also: collective traffic, unit-goods transport
Groupage transports – also known as collective traffic or unit-goods transports – are usually transports of small shipments. First, the destination carrier collects cargo at various shippers. He transports them as a groupage shipment (mixed cargo) to the receiving forwarder. In turn, the forwarder distributes the shipments to the various recipients. These tasks do not have to be performed by several forwarders. They can also be offered by just one forwarder.
