New opportunities created by greater economic freedom
European logistics systems are characterized by an east-west gap in quality. As a result of the creation of a common market, the fall of trade barriers and the introduction of the euro, the flow of goods has been significantly improved in the European Union. The most important logistics centers can traditionally be found in the Benelux countries, France and Germany’s Ruhr region. As a result of the European Union’s enlargement to the east, some logistics centers have been moved to eastern members of the European Union. In sparsely populated northern Europe, metropolitan areas are generally located in the southern areas of the country whose focus is directed at central Europe. Russia is continuing to grow rapidly and is assuming an increasingly important role as a hub between Asia and Europe. Turkey, too, has a promising economic outlook.
